Farmers and dealers should cross-reference packaging, manufacturer's instructions, local seasonal calendars, and contact the hotline for advice suitable for actual conditions. After the rice crop, many areas in the Mekong Delta rotate with corn on paddy fields, sowing around late October. Paddy fields newly converted to dryland cultivation require thorough soil preparation and sufficient basal fertilization for healthy seedling root development. This article follows the principle of right type – right time – right amount, using Đầu Trâu NPK 20-20-15 from Bình Điền as an example for the first two applications: basal fertilization and seedling top-dressing. Ingredients printed on the package According to the quantitative ingredients printed on the Đầu Trâu NPK 20-20-15 package from Bình Điền Fertilizer Joint Stock Company (Bình Điền, n.d.):
- Nitrogen (Nts) 20%; phosphorus (P₂O₅hh) 20%; potassium (K₂Ohh) 15%.
- Moisture 2.5%; net weight 50 kg.
A 50 kg bag contains approximately 10 kg N, 10 kg P₂O₅, and 7.5 kg K₂O. High nitrogen and phosphorus are suitable for the seedling stage when roots and leaves need to develop. Dosage for corn (according to package instructions)
- Basal fertilization: 150–200 kg/ha/application, which is 15–20 kg/công.
- Seedling top-dressing: 150–200 kg/ha/application, which is 15–20 kg/công.
- Actual application rates vary depending on soil, variety, and growth conditions; read the instructions on the package carefully.
The instructions do not specify exact days for seedling top-dressing and do not provide dosages for the whorl stage or tasseling. This article does not set these numbers; for subsequent applications, farmers and dealers should follow the guidance of agricultural extension officers or the manufacturer of the fertilizer used for that application. Illustrative example: a 3-công corn field, requiring 15 kg/công for basal fertilization needs 45 kg (nearly one bag); seedling top-dressing at 15 kg/công needs an additional 45 kg. Preparing paddy fields for corn 1. Good drainage: make raised beds, dig furrows; corn cannot tolerate waterlogging. 2. Mix basal fertilizer evenly into the soil before sowing or apply in rows, ensuring seeds do not directly touch the fertilizer. 3. Seedling top-dressing: spread away from the base, lightly cover with soil, and water sufficiently. 4. Upcoming dry season: the rainy season may end early (Thúy Lam, 2026), so proactive irrigation is needed; coastal areas should measure salinity before irrigating (Dân Việt, 2026). Conclusion Đầu Trâu NPK 20-20-15 has high nitrogen and phosphorus. Bình Điền recommends 15–20 kg/công for basal fertilization and 15–20 kg/công for seedling top-dressing for corn. Good soil drainage, correct application timing, and appropriate amounts are key to applying the right type, right time, and right amount for corn on paddy fields. Dosage varies by soil, variety, and plant condition. For further advice, farmers and dealers can call Út Nữ: 02943 882069.
